Recommendation of Translations

Can you recommend a 1st and 2nd Testament Translation

I use several.  The one that I use the most (and longest) is the New American Standard.  This surprises many, but I have found that it is the most faithful to the original.  It is a small thing for me as I read either silently or aloud to reinsert the proper names.  I have done this so long that I don’t even think about it.  That is not to say that there are not problems with the translation, of course there are, but that is true of every translation.  It is the very nature of translations.  It is also why I verify everything with the original language, be it Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek, I verify.  Because I have used the NASB for so long, I know where most of the problems are, so I can correct them or make a comment about them as I read.

In addition to what I have said above, this translation was done by scholarly men who were well versed in the languages of Scripture.  I know that many (if not all) had agendas according to their own doctrines, but since I am aware of those, I can get past all that.

One final thought, regardless of whether a person to read and study a translation or learn and study the original languages, if he does not learn to hear and obey His Voice, it is all meaningless.  While reading any translation, or the original language of Scripture, one must depend upon the Voice of His Spirit to lead, guide and teach him the truth.  If one is only reading the words on a page, then it does not matter which translation he picks, it is pointless.  It is His Spirit who is our Teacher, not the printed page.  Learn to depend upon Him, not the translation (which is only depending upon man and that is folly).  This is also one of the primary reasons why I continue to use the NASB, it makes me depend upon Him all that much more.
